In this thrilling debut novel, sixteen-year old Eden Huntleigh and her family live within the district of Empyrean. Under the rule of The Renegades, and their tyrant leader Cesar, every aspect of life is controlled. Streets are patrolled by humanoid Enforcers. Necessities are rationed. Disobedience is not tolerated.

When Eden receives an omen, and joins a group of Rebels led by the alluring Leo Dillon, her life begins to unravel.

Just as the Rebels are beginning to understand what they are capable of Cesar has kidnapped their families forcing them to strike before they are ready. Once inside the Empyrean palace they discover the horror of what they are truly facing. Does Eden have what it takes to be the legend she was destined to be? Ready or not she’s about to find out.

“What do we do now?” I say, blankly staring ahead in darkness. I don’t see Gabe anymore. “None of this makes any sense.”
Jude stands up straight, ready to take charge. “We have to go back to the cave and find the others. Maybe they will know what to do. Even if they don’t at least we can be somewhat protected.”
I nod my head in agreement and turn back towards the direction we just came from and begin to walk when I notice Millie is not with us. Looking behind me I see she is still standing in the same spot.
“Jude, hang on.” I say and walk back to her. “Mil, what is it?” I say as reassuring as I can.
She hangs her head and starts to wring her hands.”I know this is what we should do. Of course we should go back to that cave of misfit boys but,” she looks up at me now and tears are threatening to spill over her eyelashes. “I am just so.. scared. We aren’t all like you Eden; we don’t have a shield or whatever they called it. What will happen to Jude and I? What part do we play in this game? And why did they take my dad?” Trying so hard to be strong, her chin begins to quiver. She has never backed down from anything as long as I’ve known her. How do I convince her that she’s the bravest person I know? I’m not sure how to comfort her because I am just as scared as she is. So I do the only thing I know to do, I just stand there staring stupidly at her. Jude appears beside us. He takes Millie into an embrace and whispers in her ear. I’ve never seen him like this with her. In spite of everything that’s going on it makes me smile. It’s important to grab on to all the little pieces of joy we can and hang on tightly I suppose. In the end its all that we’ll have, it’s all that matters. He lets her go and she stands up a little straighter, wipes her eyes with the palms of her hands and smoothed her dress. “Ok. I feel silly, lets go before someone sees us.”
I look over at my brother. He flashes me a crooked grin, punches me lightly in the shoulder and begins to walk quickly to catch up to Millie.
Maybe it’s the pent up anxiety, but this time around it doesn’t seem to take as long to get to the cave. A steady buzz of adrenaline is flowing through my veins and I’m pretty sure it’s the only thing holding me together. We are following the same path that we had just a couple of hours before, but this time feels different. The stench of deception is trailing closely at our heels. I may not know much but I do know that once I lose this buzz I will crumble.

  1. It was great chatting with you at the Tell Me A Good Story Collectible Book Fair, Angie. I went to your website, subscribed to your blog, and am enjoying your posts.

Now, I’d like to follow up in person. How about coffee Thurs. 7/16 or Fri. 7/17? I think I heard you mention a day job, so I’m not sure about your availability other than in the late afternoon or early evening.

If you live up in the northwest, we could meet either at the Village Inn on Oracle just south of Orange Grove, or the Starbucks inside Barnes&Noble at Foothills Mall.

Looking forward to continuing the conversation, Robin
