Title: The Beautiful Dead (The Beautiful Dead, #1)
Author: Daryl Banner
Release Date: July 29, 2013
Genre: Post Apocalyptic Zombie
~ Synopsis ~
In fact, the whole world’s dead. Every single person, apparently. Unburied and reimagined into a beautiful living-dead woman called Winter, she is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in a quaint, peaceful city with no hunger, no sickness and no bills to pay. Her Second Life is perfect in every way possible.
So why is she so bent on destroying it all?
After angering the mayor, befriending rebel headless teenagers and igniting romance with a dark and brooding neighbor, she finds herself wrestling madly with a First Life she cannot remember and this Second Life she cannot accept. Not to mention the maniacal army of rotting corpses who want her dead. Again.
But none of that matters in comparison to an even worse problem. There’s a guest in her house. A rude, good-looking man on the run … a man with a heartbeat.
~ Excerpt ~
“When my mom finds me,” says Megan, “the first thing I’m going to tell her is I’m sorry.”
A sigh escapes my lips. “I’m … sure she knows that.”
“Sorry because my little brother wasn’t careful either, and he was killed,” she goes on, stonily. “And now me.”
I put a hand to my mouth. “Oh, Megan. I’m … I’m so sorry about your—about your little brother. Listen to me. We’re going to get out of here, okay?”
Sweet as my dialogue is with the little Human, Helena has to go and ruin it. “There’s no use,” she calls out, annoyed. “We’re all going to die soon. Give it up.”
“This,” I snap, spinning around to glare at my maker, “is not your prisoner-conversation. You are not allowed. This is my prisoner-conversation, between me and this sweet little girl Megan. Go find your own conversation!”
I turn back to the girl. “Tell me about your home.”
She responds: “I’m really hungry.”
~ Review by Kelly ~
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
The Beautiful Dead is the first book in The Beautiful Dead trilogy.
When I was asked to read this book, I told my husband “Hmmm sounds interesting, but odd. I’m not so sure about this.” He rolled his eyes at me and went on playing his Risk-type app on his phone. I ignored him. Curiosity won out and I accepted the book for review.
WHAT A FIND! This book has many things going for it. First I want to get out my only small dislike. The first 10-15% was a little confusing and slow. Just push through it. I didn’t understand when I was reading that it was important and really sets up a good portion of the story.
Now to all the other stuff that is excellent
THE CHARACTERS! The characters of this story are incredibly rich with emotions and feelings. All characters have a purpose and are used with the precision of a well played chess game. They are woven together beautifully.
BUTT KICKING HEROINE! I have a thing for strong women in books. Winter is all kinds of awesome with her undead self. She is a fighter. You cheer for her. Additional bonus: the book is filled with butt kicking ladies. Jasmine, Megan, Eana, Ann, and Marigold were strong women who fought for what they wanted.
THE WORLD! It was a genuine treat to be immersed in this world. It was so well thought out and imaginative.
THE OVERALL MESSAGE! Yes, it’s about the dead, or undead, but it’s more about living life. It matters how we live our lives. It matters how we treat people. It matters if we pretend to live or if we truly live.
I will definitely be reading the second and third book in the series. 5 books

Dead of Winter (Beautiful Dead, #2)
Winter’s Second Life became a lot more complicated when the Living moved into her hometown of Trenton. Undead neighbors fight with their Breathing ones. Food is sparse. And, worst of all, the season is taking a change for the colder.
A desperate plea for help to a neighboring city turns deadly and soon Winter finds herself facing an old friend from her past whose plot to annihilate all life on the planet may have everything to do with her.
And what about the man-with-the-heartbeat in her house? Is there even room for love in such a ruined, unforgiving world?
New friends are made. Others are lost forever. In the dead of winter, no one is safe.
Almost Alive (Beautiful Dead, #3)
Coming April 24th
Twelve years have passed since the devastation.
The world is changed. What once was a planet struggling to survive is now a planet bursting to life. The humans are thriving. Gardens are growing. Trees are reaching up to the sky and the Undeadly clutch on the planet is slowly letting go.
But what does that mean for Winter and her friends?
In the wake of spring, the last of the desperate Undead gather, fighting to maintain their place in a world that no longer wants them. Mother Nature slowly but certainly works to purge the planet of the Dead, just when Winter thought she had finally embraced this Second Life.
Her new friends are back and old nemeses return for the final chapter in Winter’s Undead journey.
