Blog Tour & Review – Spark by Brooke Cumberland

After being saved by a firefighter, Velaney Wills meets Eric Reilley, who recently moved from Texas to Boston to work on the Boston Fire Department. Ironically, Eric lives below Velaney and with his devilish charm, and sweet accent, Velaney is finding him hard to resist.

Velaney grew up in what should’ve been the perfect childhood. Her father owns his own dental practice, and her mother a Pastor. She wasn’t allowed to swear and never got into any trouble, however, her troubled and complicated past makes her build walls that she doesn’t let down easily.

Eric is fascinated with the fact that Velaney can’t swear. She uses filler words to express herself that he often finds hilarious. Velaney runs as her outlet – releasing the rage and anger she has built up inside her from a deep secret she’s never told anyone except her lifelong best friend, and roommate, Carissa.

Eric and Velaney become running partners – only securing their obvious sexual tension between them. No matter how much Velaney pushes Eric away, he will always be there to save her.

Review by Venture

Velaney wakes to her home in smoke and barely able to breathe. A guy she has never seen before puts oxygen on her and carries her outside. She finds out he is a firefighter that is new in the building. Eric seems to keep saving Velaney every time something happens. He makes her breakfast and even though she is attracted to him, she refuses to let her emotional walls down. A friend’s brother asks her out and he seems to be a very nice guy. Velaney likes him and he seems sweet. Eric however doesn’t like the new guy trying to be part of her life and makes his wishes known. Just when everything looks like it is coming together when Velaney’s personal nightmare is back from the past. He is there to remind Velaney that her past isn’t in the past. That he will destroy whatever future she wants to have.

I really enjoyed this book. I could relate to Velaney and was really amazed with Eric. Eric pushed Velaney but not any farther than it took to face her fears. When her past collides with her future she showed weakness but eventually overcomes it to get what she wants. Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It is a statement that everyone hears but never truly understands until they are put in that predicament. The book isn’t a cheesy romance novel and I’m curious to see what happens next. I’m truly hoping for a new book and a happy ending…..Yes, I’m one of those girls who love happy endings. I never like to read a book and there wasn’t any closure or happy ending to make all the strife worth it. This book is a must read and I hope I get to read the next one sooner that later. Plus I might have to stalk the author to make sure I can read whatever she writes (I’m only joking a little). I give this book a 5 book rating.
